Yoshi was born in Mexico City to parents of indigenous descent from the Mixtec region of the state of Oaxaca. She immigrated to Santa Maria at a very young age, where she continues to reside. Yoshi enrolled at Allan Hancock College after high school and eventually transferred to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where she received her Bachelors in Architecture degree. Recognizing the crucial role that the built environment plays in the well being of communities and individuals, Yoshi gets a sense of fulfillment from working on projects that can have large scale impacts on societal issues. Having experienced first hand the impact and opportunities that can be derived from living in an affordable housing community, this project type has become Yoshi’s greatest passion - the majority of her career has been dedicated to design and advocacy in the affordable housing market sector. Higher education is Yoshi’s next biggest passion; she sees it as one of the most important elements for improving children’s futures, and often volunteers at community events that aim to expand access to youth programs. She has also taken on a more impactful role by recently becoming a part-time instructor at Allan Hancock College.
